Yesterday, the fog cleared at sunrise and we had a Mediterranean style day
of lovely warm sunshine, with very little wind and seemingly always in the
wrong direction. We managed to get off the shallow continental style shelf
and find the North East going Gulf stream. Depths went from 100m to 2300m in
about 20 miles. Water temperature rose from 16 to 24 degrees C and there
were no more New England crab pots to be concerned about.
Later in the day, we came across DINAH, another OSTAR entry. Barry had
sailed to New York for 4th July and picked up 2 crew. He was headed the
same as us, for Horta and no doubt he will get there first but we have a
head start after another windless night as our tank is large enough to keep
moving by gentle motoring. In fact with the helpful current of up to 1.5
knot, progress is fair.
A few large ships around but generally quiet. Paul was treated to a pretty
good dolphin show late yesterday and has some good pictures to take home.
This morning is similar to yesterday, so the iron topsail is still doing its
stuff at low revs, as we make over 5knots over the ground. GRIB warns of
very strong winds Sunday/Monday but from the south.
