Wasnt that a pathetic entry last night!! Apologies - I was tired!
Discovered the camp site we stayed in was in San Vito Chiento!! On
leaving on Thurs am we went to the cemetery as I said. It was a moving
experience - >2000 men buried there. It is on top of a hill overlooking
the valley below and so very peaceful - unlike the war that claimed their
lives. It was a privilige to visit.
Driving was very hot and we started the generator to power the air-con!
This worked well and cooled us down a bit as we drove. Initially the
country was flat but soon reverted to the mountain passes, viaducts and
tunnels! Beautiful. To be fair Suzi led us to our chosen place to stay -
no prob this time!! It was set on the mountain side in a small town
called Avellino. Was fun cos no-one spoke English! We managed with a few
phrases and lots of pointing etc! We seemed to be the only ones staying
there but it was fine!
Yesterday - as I said so briefly - it was a long hard drive. Main problem
for Stephen was the gusting strong wind as we traversed the high mountain
passes, viaducts and tunnels all of which were higher and longer than the
day before!! Such roads are amazing! (so were the roadworks!) The
mountains and valleys were spectacular but hard to really appreciate when
driving. I didnt dare look down! Needless to say, neither did Stephen!
Villages are scattered along the mountain sides and in the valleys. Some
look very precarious indeed!!Yet again Suzi successfully led us to the
Holiday Inn in Cosenza so better take back what I said about her!
This morning we set off thinking the worst was over but...The strong wind
still gusted, the viaducts were more breathtaking over such deep gorges
and the scenery was magnificent. We have not seen so many roadworks on a
major road - ever! It slowed us down a lot and was exhausting for
Stephen. We are now in Villa San Giovanni where we get the ferry to
Sicily tomorrow. The ferry to Tunis is early Tues am so we are in good
time.
So, thats you up to date for now! Thanks for all your interest and most
importantly your prayers. Again we have proved how God goes before us and
leads us.
Love H&S
