Last you heard from us we were just about to go into Sicily. The ferry
crossing was only 35 mins and calm! The roads in Sicily were more of the
same! The bridges werent so high but the tunnels were longer! The longest
was 3327m!! All credit to the engineers. Driving was as stressful as in
Italy and the scooters were an extra hazard! There doesnt seem to be a
right of way so traffic comes at you in all directions! We decided to
stay on the outskirts of Palmero which was wise - guidance again.
Monday 21st was a rest day prior to our early start the next morning. The
most striking thing about Sicily was the way rubbish was just dumped in
the street - you wouldnt believe it! Seems lorries came round early in
the am and lifted it.
Tuesday is a day best forgotten! Up at 5am, safely to the port before
gridlock - even at that time of morning!- then finding out by trial and
error what to do next! Eventually after queing in several places we got
the necessary bits of paper stamped and took our place in the queue. Is
every man for himself from here on in! Sailing left 1hr30mins late. I
along with most of the other passengers (not Stephen) was horribly sea
sick and just curled up on the floor praying that it would end! Anyway it
did! After 10hrs! Almost 3hrs later, at 00.20hrs we cleared customs and
faced Tunis! Was like rush hour - incredible! The hotel we had chosen
was full but we were taken to another where Mollie was safely parked and
we collapsed for the night!
Next morning we found our way out of Tunis mid blaring horns and police
whistles - most disconcerting! We stopped in El Jem for the night -
interesting. There is a Roman ruin there which is really dramatic and
worth seeing.
Tonight (24th) we are in Mednine - the last significant town before the
Libyan border. Stephen contacted our Libyan guide and he is going to meet
us at the border as planned on Sat am so....
Dont know when we will contact you again but we will DV.
Has been great to get msgs from you and e-mails too - thank you.
Keep praying - we need it! But we have proved God goes before us and
guides us.
Love, S&H
